My wife and I have been happily married for 15 years. I am 20 years older than she is. I'm 55 and she'll be 35 in August. For about 5 years now, I've been letting my beard grow (most of it is gray) and like big mustaches. I also hate getting hair cuts. My wife has been telling me that she wants me to start trimming my beard and mustach to have more of a clean-cut look. I hate shaving my face and dying my beard. My wife has lost some weight and wears size 10-12 pants, always highlights her hair, goes to the gym, takes care of our home needs including very good home cooked meals. Our daughter who is in high-school also tells me that I should do something about all my hair. My feeling about this is that I love big mustaches (always have always will), and love big beards, if this is the way I like to look, without disrespect for my wife and daughter, why should I have to change what I like for them? My wife is happy with my physic (I workout everyday), but not my looks. Can anyone help?

That should be a compromise between you and her. You'll both have to decide what is more important, the hair or the relationship (unless you both just like having a tiff about nothing, in which case you both already have what you want). ;-)

Sorry about the controlling issue on her part. I hate shaving also. I've had this beard for 35 years. We should periodically trim up a bit just to throw them a curve. I just had the hair and beard trimmed back for Spring and an upcoming court case. I wish you luck! ;-)=

Well, look at it this way. Your wife and daughter are the ones who have to look at you. If they tell you that they think your hair and beard would look better trimmed up some, then maybe it really would. If you don't care whether you look nice for them then do nothing. It's okay either way, please yourself or please your family, up to you....and if they really love you they will accept you either way.

I am sorry to hear your wife is giving you a hard time. My husband has hair down to his waist and a beard to match (ZZ TOP all the way) and that's the way he likes it. I didn't necessarily like it in the beginning. I couldn't imagine him changing and I couldn't imagine demanding he change either. Then he wouldn't be happy. I realized that he may not look the way others want him to look BUT he is the nicest smartest man in the world . Long hair, beard and mustache ,blue jeans and t-shirts. I wouldn't change a thing!

I once had a boyfriend who grew a mustache, sideburns and a beard. I asked him to cut them off. He removed the beard, trimmed the mustache considerably and told me the sideburns were a part of his heritage and he was keeping them.

I liked that about him!

And he was right not to allow me to control everything. After all, it was his face and he had a perfect right to determine how he wanted his face to look, although he did give in somewhat.

I don't think you should have to completely change the way you look if it really makes you happy. However, what's wrong with getting an occasional haircut just to keep it looking nice? Or trimming your beard and mustache so it looks clean and professional? Grey hair tends to be very coarse, so maybe the reason she wants you to trim it is because it's scratchy when you kiss. Everyone wants to feel attractive to their mate, so maybe by compromising a little and not letting all your hair get out of control, everyone will be happier.

first thing i have to say is that it's a myth that african american's hair grows slower than other races. second thing is, you should cut it off gradually because once you get it all cut off your still going to need to keep getting it cut due to the hairstyling that you do; however if it is that severe you should get all the split ends cut off at one time so you have a clean slate to start with

Frankly, I'd go an inch or so at a time. You can always cut more off...but you can't add it back on once it's off.

I'm an African American 21 year old. I've had long hair my whole life and that's a huge part of me--my hair. I want to cut my hair because I want my hair maintainence to be a little easier. Some people may be upset because they like my hair long and it's rare these days to find black girls with (real) long hair. I don't want to regret it once I'm done, but I'm pretty sure that I won't because this is something that I've always wanted and I know I'm old enough now to do it. If you want to cut it i say go ahead! I was faced with a similar situation...I grew up with really long hair and my family (esp. my mom) always admired it and told me never to cut it. But when it all boils down to it, you have to live with all of that darn hair!! So you should do what you want with it. People with shorter hair usually don't understand all of the mess you have to go through with longer hair. When i turned 18 i decided to cut all of mine off...I hated it. but i thought that's what i wanted at the time. I still keep it considerably shorter (shoulder length) and im very comfortable with it now. I would suggest starting out slow and keep cutting a little bit more off until it gets to a comfortable length. Also, don't worry so much about what other people will think. I'm not African American but....when I had very long hair and decided to get it cut I went just a little shorter than what I had.....worked with it for awhile and then decided to go a bit shorter....and so on. I think if you do it as a gradual process...first others will get used to it and so will you and you will discover what length you feel comfortable at. I have decided over time I enjoy my long hair better so I've let it grow back out but I wanted to let you know what I did ....maybe it would work for you.

Every time I cut my hair short, I regret it %26amp; grow it out all over again. Just make sure that is really what you want before you do it.

Here's what I think:

I had waist length hair a few years ago, and I donated 14 inches to locks of love. I still had long hair -- past my shoulders. If you have hair that long, I think you should donate it -- you only need 10 inches, and then it will be shorter, but still kinda' long. If you don't want to cut that much off, just trim a few inches off. Your hair will look healthier, and it will be more manageable.

i go in tell them how i want it cut and its never what i explained. i have been to six different hair cut people this year and only went back to one, twice but he got lazy and i never know if they get pissed if you tell them they did a bad job.

i know i have the same problem...hair dressers do my head in ...they dont know what you want no matter how hard you try 2explain to them,......the only advice i can say is keep trying different salons until you like your hair style....OR go back to the 1 you already when to twice....and when the are done...if u still dont like your hair....tel them it wasnt the style you was looking for..and wanted it a bit different...they might have the mardies or not...but least u told them...so i think they wil aprecate the comment..as the will know in future...and they might even listern more carefully to what style u want next time....OR...take a picture of a hair style that u want from a magazine or the internet and give the hairdresser the picture tel them u want that style......when thay are done... if it dont look like the picture...them tel them it doe'snt look the same...hope this helps..

bring a picture! as a man, this may be a tough thing to do, but it is worth it. if you are too embarrassed to bring a photo to the barbershop, then go to a salon, it will not be out of the ordinary there. if you get a good salon cut, then you can go to the barbershop for upkeep. it will be easy to maintain once you get it how you like it : )

I like your hair long but, you still look very adorable with your hair short. Try putting on some pretty lip gloss and dangling earrings to show off your hair cut. Guys tend to like that. Also, do you wear eye liner? Dressing up your eyes with a little eyeliner would be cute. I don't know about the eyeliner, you look really young. Stick with the lip gloss and earrings.

You need to go ahead and do it now because if it is not cut how you want it and don't like it then you will hate your wedding pictures. Not to mention what if they cut your bangs too short??? karin's, in sierra madre is fabulous. i've been going there for years and i love it. they're great about knowing your personality and hair-type and what would fit best for you. minnie has been cutting my hair for about 7 or 8 years and she's fantastic. she'll tell you if something won't look good on you and recommend a different style, which is important. i would recommend going to either minnie or karin. i've never had karin cut my hair before, but i've seen her cut other people's hair when i'm getting mine cut and she always does a great job.

it's a little bit out of the way for you, but it's a great place and worth the extra 10 minute drive. i'm not sure about the rates for guys, b/c it will depend on the stylist, but i think they range from $25-$45. it's quaint and homey, the people working there are friendly, and one of the various pooches belonging to the stylists is usually around to beg for tummy rubs and keep you company if you get to your appointment early.

Layers are good for curly hair because they lighten the weight of the curl, allowing them to be more bouncy. I keep my curly hair at shoulder length and have layers all around. when I get out of the shower, I brush my hair and scrunch mousse into it. Then I dry it upside down with a diffuser attachment on my hairdyer. This keeps the curls from getting too frizzy and also gives my hair more volume (I've got pretty thin hair, but one wouldn't know it because of all the wonderful curls!)

Well, since you have thin hair already you may not want to thin it out. I say maybe some layers, and maybe for a change straighten out your bangs on your own.. I love curly hair and straight bangs!

if you get choppy layers the curls will sit on top of one another, this means your hair won't look too thin. If its thin, don't get it thinned out - this is really bad for your hair anyway! So my advice would be to get choppy layers, tell the hairdresser not to cut any length off and to cut it semi dry not wet.

I would say take hair vitamins, and avoid straightening it even though it'll look better in the short term, because it will damage your hair and make it break off, which prevents it from growing. You can probably use products like Frizz-Ease serum to tame the poofiness. Also use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep it healthy.

I'm a hairstylist, and no offense to the person above me(sorry) but matrix products tend to build up on your hair after a while. The best product line i have found anywhere is Paul Mitchell, but you can only buy it in salons. The product you want is called "Super Skinny" and its in a clear bottle with a green lid. it adds a nice shine to your hair while still being light enough that it won't weigh it down. to apply it, you want to put one or two pumps of it into your palms, and rub them together. Then work it into your hair from ends to roots(if you start at your roots, your hair may look too greasy and oily after a short amount of time.) If you'd like to add volume, I'd suggest using the Body-building Shampoo and conditioner also by Paul Mitchell :) they work wonders :) and are safe for colored hair. Hope this helps!!!

If they still wont, then maybe suggest a compromise, not too short but opt for a mid-lentgh. Man, I've loved that style my whole life, but it doesn't really suit me. It's called a 'concave cut' or an 'angled bob' by most hair dressers. A lot of mods from the 60's had that style, that is, if we're both thinking of the same haircut...

When asking your hairdresser, physically show them what you want. Show them how angled you want it with your hands, and make sure they know what length you want to keep. Pictures can be useful too, if you can find any good ones.

It's all about personal preference since both can be cute. I think it's best to consider how getting layers will affect your lifestyle and hair length goals. Well youll have to put your foot down for one, make sure she knows you would rather have her hair long and in the future could she try to grow it out for you? As for singing, make sure she knows how much you like it and how happy it makes you, she should get the hint and start it up again. For color, I would go dark blonde with some lighter blonde highlights. Maybe add some red if you want something funkier. Whatever you do, do NOT get your hair cut above the chin. Round face types look best with hair lines that fall below the chin. An A line type cut would be really cute too. Good luck!

I have the same kind of hair.. I had some darker lowlights put in it and I got my hair stacked... Thats when its longer in the front and kinda goes up in the back. When you get it stacked, it doesnt necessarily have to be SUPER short. My longest layer is about half inch below my chin. Good Luck!
