When i try to cut my dog's hair, he bites?

my one year old dog (shih tzu) gets very violent when i try to cut his hair. he would try to bite me if i try to cut anywhere on his body. maybe i accidently cut his skin or hes scared i might hurt him i dont know why he doesnt like it. i don't really want to go to vet and cut because its expensive. any suggestions on how to handle him?

Do not use scissors on a dog if it is jumpy or violent, you could seriously injure the dog. Muzzling a shih tzu is very difficult since they barely have a muzzle to stick a muzzle on. Try using a E-collar, the dog can see you but can't bite because the E-collar prevents it from reaching anything beyond its own head. Of course you can't groom the head but then again he might figure out that the clippers aren't really hurting him too. You should have started him with grooming as a little puppy at 8 to 10 weeks, now you have a real pain on your hands. and as for the cost if you can't afford the grooming why did you get a high maitence breed? Your best plan is to have the dog totally shaved about twice a year so you can be cheap and only pay for two grooming. Is $30 to $45 bucks a groom too much to ask? You pay a lot more then that each month to feed the dog. Is there a Petsmart OR Petco near you? They charge about what i mentioned before for grooming of course your pet must be current on vaccines to get groomed there but their safety records are very high.

Show him that it's nothing to be afraid of. If you don't cut his skin, he'll begin to realize it doesn't hurt. And don't rush yourself, he can sense your emotions.

When he doesn't try to bite you and he acts really nonchalant, give him a treat.

Take him to a dog groomer. They can work in short sessions over time until he isn't afraid any more. Shih Tzus can get pretty nippy if they aren't introduced to scissors and clippers early on, and it takes alot of work to get them used to grooming if you start at a later age.

I agree with all of the answers about using clippers instead of scissors. I would also definitely suggest you take the dog to a groomer. I say this because long-haired dogs like Shih Tzus and Yorkies become highly depressed if you cut their hair too short. I know it sounds crazy, but it is true. So if the hair trim is necessary, make sure it is only a trim and be prepared to deal with a very sad puppy dog.

get very matted. that means the fur is tangled in the skin

if you go to cut the dogs fur you could cut the dog and

or you could slice him opened. it also hurts your

dog when you do this because you are pulling on the

fur that is tangled in the skin. please stop. the dog is now

scared for his hair to be cut because you have hurt him

so i would suggest you bring him to a vet and let them

trank him and groom him and after that you need to keep

his fur short but they have to be groomed every 4 to 6

weeks. the fact that you have already hurt him means that

most likely he will have to get tranked all the time to groom

him unless you find some one with a lot of Patience and

will take their time with him. i would do that after he

gets cut down. please stop hurting him.
